Parkhurst brought a yearly series of hockey cards to the world when no one else would. The 1951-52 Parkhurst series brought hockey cards to the mass market for good. The 1963-64 Parkhurst series became the last series, with Topps and eventually O-Pee-Chee taking over the market.
The 1963-64 Parkhurst set included 99 cards, which was nearly double from the 55 the year before. Interestingly, with the 1962-63 series, Parkhurst introduced the checklist but for 1963-64 the checklist was absent. As usual, the Parkhurst series included players from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings, while Topps featured players from the other three teams. The set is valued by Beckett Hockey Monthly at up to $2500 complete. A common card is worth up to $12.
The most notable rookie cards in the set were the number 99 card featuring Cesare Maniago, goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens. The card is valued at $175. The only other rookie card over the $100 threshold is that of Alex Faulkner of the Detroit Red Wings, valued at $125. This was the only card ever produced of Alex. He played a total of 101 games in the NHL, starting with a single game as a Toronto Maple Leaf in 1961-62. His only full season came in 1962-63 when he played all 70 of Detroit’s regular season games. In 1963-64, he played 30 games for Detroit, followed up by a handful of seasons in the minors.
Other significant rookie cards included in the set are that of Red Berenson, Jacques Laperriere, Terry Harper and John Ferguson, all of the Montreal Canadiens.
The most valuable card in the series belongs to Gordie Howe of the Red Wings at $450. Two other cards are valued at $100 or more. Terry Sawchuk is at $110 and Tim Horton is right at $100.
