1974-75 Gilbert Perreault O-Pee-Chee Error?

  • by

Laying claim to a vintage hockey card error is something like discovering a new planet. No matter how small or insignificant, you want the credit. I’ve searched to see if anyone has noticed this one and I believe I might be the first…

Perreault is referred to as Gilles on the back of the 1974-75 Topps / O-Pee-Chee #25.

On the back of the 1974-75 O-Pee-Chee and Topps #25 hockey card of Gil Perreault, he is referred to as Gilles in the little blurb. Of course, Gil is short for Gilbert but Gilles is Gilles. I even called upon my French-Canadian ‘amis’ to verify that the two names were not interchangeable. Apparently, it would be like trying to substitute John for James.

A far cry from the 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee Gilbert Perreault rookie card that is valued at $100, the 1974-75 O-Pee-Chee card is still worth $8.00. The stats on the back and the blurb show a disappointing 1973-74 season with the Buffalo Sabres that was cut short at 55 games due to a broken leg.

The ‘error’ is obviously uncorrected and will make no significant difference in the value but it’s the stuff which makes the hobby even more fun than it already is.

For a serious guide to hockey card errors, you must check out and bookmark the onestophockeycards.com Hockey Card Error Guide. Most every error card is documented and most come with pictures. The site is simple and very easily navigable. There is a menu of links at the top of the page that go to seperate pages depending on what card manufacturer you’re looking for. Darryl Young is the man behind this great resource and should be applauded.
