The Card
The 1976-77 Topps Darryl Sittler hockey card is valued at $3.00. It is one of 264 cards in the set with the full collection valued at $200. A common card is valued at $.50. The back of the Sittler card celebrates his record setting ten point game against the Boston Bruins in 1975-76, an NHL regular season record that still stands today. There is also a record breaker card in the set dedicated to this feat. The highlight of the 1976-77 Topps set is the Bryan Trottier rookie card which is valued at $35.

The Player
Sittler played three years of junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey Association with the London Knights before being drafted eighth overall in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ahead of Darryl in the draft were some great players in Gilbert Perreault, Dale Tallon, Reg Leach and Rick MacLeish.
Darryl played in the National Hockey League from 1970-71 to 1984-85 with the Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings. In 1,096 regular season games, he totalled 1,121 points.
1975-76 was Sittler’s first of two 100 point seasons. With the help of the ten point game, Darryl reached exactly 100 points on 41 goals and 59 assists in 79 games. His 100 points were good for ninth overall in the NHL. In 1977-78, he would again surpass the 100 point plateau with 117. That year, he finished third in the league behind Guy Lafleur of the Montreal Canadiens and Bryan Trottier of the New York Islanders. The trio were the only three to go over 100 points that season.
Sittler is one of just seven NHL players to score six or more goals in a single game. The list of seven does not include Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Bobby or Brett Hull, Phil Esposito, Alex Ovechkin or Sidney Crosby.
As a Maple Leaf, Sittler trails just Mats Sundin for most career goals and points with the team. However, Sundin played more than 140 more games in a Toronto jersey than Sittler. Darryl still holds the team’s career record for most hat tricks with 18.
In 1989, Darryl Sittler was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Although Toronto does not retired jersey numbers, Sittler’s number 27 is honoured by the club. His number 9 has been retired by the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League.
