He played in the NHL in parts of three decades, was a champion in junior, played in three Stanley Cup finals and was in the race for the Art Ross Trophy for a season. Yet, the name Doug Mohns probably doesn’t get the attention it deserves.
Mohns played in the National Hockey League from 1953-54 until 1974-75 with the Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Minnesota North Stars, Atlanta Flames and Washington Capitals.
An all around player, at times he was a forward while at others he played the point. He played a total of 1,390 regular season games in the NHL and contributed 710 points. He played an additional 94 in the playoffs and kept pace with 50 points.
Doug Mohns Collection
Typically, in the days when the two hockey card companies were Topps and Parkhurst, they split the league in half with each taking three teams. 1954-55 was an exception and both sets featured players from all six teams. Because of this, there is a rookie card of Doug Mohns in both the 1954-55 Topps and 1954-55 Parkhurst sets.
However, it’s the Topps cards that is the most valuable. The 1954-55 Topps Doug Mohns rookie card (number 18) is valued at $125. The set featured 60 cards and a complete collection is worth $4,500. The Parkhurst rookie card (number 57) is valued at $40 and is one of 100 cards in the set. Despite the higher quantity, the Parkhurst set is valued at $4,000 complete.
Doug Mohns – Junior Hockey
Doug played junior hockey for the Barrie Flyers of the OHA from 1950-51 to 1952-53. In his first and final season with the club, the Flyers were Memorial Cup champions. In 1951, the team beat the Winnipeg Monarchs for the crown and in 1953 the championship was had at the hands of the St. Boniface Canadiens. In 1952-53, Doug finished tied for sixth in the race for the Eddie Powers Trophy with 76 points over 56 games.
Doug Mohns – NHL Career
Often on the roster of mediocre teams during his career, Mohns did play in three Stanley Cup finals. As a member of the Boston Bruins, Doug played in two consecutive years against the mighty Montreal Canadiens. The Bruins lost against Rocket Richard and the rest of the Habs gang in 1956-57 and 1957-58. In 1958, he totalled 13 points in 12 playoff games after just 21 points in 54 regular season games.
In 1964-65, it was the Canadiens again that dashed Doug’s hopes of getting his name inscribed on the Stanley Cup. Now a member of the Chicago Black Hawks, the team made a valiant effort to take the prize but came up short with Montreal winning in seven games.
With Chicago in 1966-67, Mohns finished with 25 goals and 60 points. A few years before the offensive explosion brought on by expansion, the goal total tied him for seventh in the NHL while the 60 points placed him ninth.
Doug was a victim of expansion in his final years in the game. Chicago sent him to the Minnesota North Stars during the 1970-71 season. He played just 28 games for the Atlanta Flames in 1973-74, their second year of existense. His final season in the NHL was the first for the Washington Capitals. That team won just eight games in 1974-75, the least of any team in the NHL since expansion. Even in the shortened 1994-95 season, the last place Ottawa Senators won nine of 48 games.
