Is eBay a Good Place to Sell Vintage Hockey Cards?

  • by

Want to sell your hockey cards for profit? eBay, right now, is the easiest and safest method. Is it profitable? There are fees to eBay each time you list an item and each time that item sells. There are fees to PayPal for each transaction. Sure, eBay is the place to buy ANYTHING from around the world quick, but it is also home to bargain hunters galore who don’t ever want to pay full price for an item.

With all that said, it is still cheaper than the old days when you had to open a retail store, rent a table at a hockey card show or pay for space at the local flea market. It is expected that hockey cards will sell less on eBay than the value given in Beckett Hockey Monthly, unless the card is quite rare or professionally graded at a high rate.

Here is a selection of some of the hockey cards that fetched fairly high prices on Sunday, November 27, 2011. The cards are of varying conditions but were generally in good shape.

Player Year Make Number Final Bid Book Value
Perreault, Gilbert 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee 136 $31.00 $12.00
Mahovlich, Frank 1962-63 Parkhurst 4 $29.02 $80.00
Keon, Dave 1962-63 Parkhurst 15 $28.09 $100.00
Geoffrion, Bernie 1962-63 Parkhurst 48 $22.80 $40.00
Bossy, Mike 1978-79 O-Pee-Chee 115 $39.99 $100.00
Checklist 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee 263 $15.99 $40.00
Trottier, Bryan 1976-77 O-Pee-Chee 115 $24.50 $60.00
Plante, Jacques 1958-59 Parkhurst 22 $31.00 $300.00
Kyle, Walter 1951-52 Parkhurst 21 $102.50 $60.00
Howe, Gordie 1958-59 Topps 8 $102.50 $500.00
Pavelich, Marty 1951-52 Parkhurst 54 $227.50 $60.00
Howe, Gordie 1963-64 Parkhurst 55 $61.06 $450.00
Bower, Johnny 1962-63 Parkhurst 16 $49.99 $50.00
Esposito, Phil 1965-66 Topps 116 $105.27 $400.00
Howe, Gordie 1954-55 Topps 8 $268.51 $1,800.00
Harvey, Doug 1955-56 Parkhurst 45 $405.09 $125.00
$1,544.81 $4,177.00

Although most cards did sell for less than the Beckett book value, a few cards definitely went for considerably more. Of course, the 1951-52 Parkhurst cards went higher because of their rarity. The Doug Harvey card was professionally graded quite high. The 1954-55 Gordie Howe hockey card showed surface and corner wear but didn’t seem to be in that bad of shape. $268 for an $1800 card seems like a pretty damn good deal.

Keep in mind, this is just a cross-section of the thousands of hockey cards bought and sold on eBay every single day. Each card you list can seem like a needle in a haystack. Constructing your listing in the best possible manner can go a long way in getting your needle found. Keep tuned for more on tweeking an eBay listing for success.
