Gordie Howe played in the NHL from 1946-47 to 1970-71 with the Detroit Red Wings. He then returned to the NHL for one season, 1979-80, with the Hartford Whalers. From 1973-74 to 1978-79, Howe played in the World Hockey Association with the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers. Between the two major leagues, Gordie played a total of 2,421 games (regular season and playoffs combined). He put an astounding 1,071 pucks in the net throughout those games.
The Gordie Howe rookie card appeared in the 1951-52 Parkhurst series as number 66. Howe’s final card came in the 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee series as number 175. There are 41 mainstream hockey cards featuring Gordie Howe during his playing days. The mainstream manufacturers, of course, include Parkhurst, Topps and O-Pee-Chee. The number does not include subsets or non-mainstream cards like team sets or food brands (Coca-Cola, Dad’s cookies, etc.).
If one was to try and collect each of these 41 cards from scratch today, according to Beckett Hockey Monthly, one would pay $13,120. If you wanted these cards in pristine condition, the collection would cost a lot (probably extremely more) more than the $13,000. If quality isn’t that important, the price could be much lower.
