Ken Mosdell: Last Of The Brooklyn Americans

  • by

ken mosdell montreal canadiens 1954-55 parkhurst hockey cardKen Mosdell was the last active player that had played a game with the Brooklyn Americans. He went on to win four Stanley Cup championships with the Montreal Canadiens. On either end of his NHL career, Mosdell starred for the Montreal Royals, playing junior for the team and semi-pro with the club by the same name.

Ken Mosdell – Junior and Minor Pro

Mosdell played junior hockey with the Montreal Royals of the Junior Amateur Hockey Association in 1939-40 and 1940-41. In his second year, the Royals won the JAHA championship with a win over the Montreal Junior Canadiens in the finals. They then easily won the overall Quebec Junior Hockey Championships over Clearpoint.

Next up for the Royals were the Oshawa Generals in the Richardson Cup finals to determine which team from Eastern Canada would advance to the Memorial Cup. The Royals took out the Generals but the Winnipeg Rangers proved too much when it came to the Mem Cup finals. Mosdell scored ten and assisted on 16 for 26 points over ten games during the Memorial Cup run.

After a year in the NHL, Ken played two years in the QSHL with RCAF teams while serving during World War II. Upon his return to professional hockey, Mosdell spent much of the 1945-46 season in the American Hockey League with the Buffalo Bisons.

Following his National Hockey League career, Ken returned to the QHL for 1957-58 and 1958-59. He led the Floyd ‘Busher’ Curry coached Montreal Royals offensively in both seasons. In 1959-60, Mosdell and the Royals moved to the EPHL.

In 1957-58, Ken was sixth in the QHL with 69 points. The following year, he dropped to eighth with 60 points but was named a Second Team All-Star. In 1959-60, Mosdell helped the Royals win an EPHL championship with a win over the Sudbury Wolves in seven games. Despite the win, Montreal was outscored by Sudbury 21-20 on the series.

Ken Mosdell – NHL

Between 1941-42 and 1958-59, Mosdell played 694 regular season games in the NHL with the Brooklyn Americans, Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Blackhawks. Over that time, Ken scored 141 and assisted on 168 for 309 points. In the Stanley Cup playoffs, he added 29 points over 79 games.

Mosdell’s first season, 1941-42, was with the Brooklyn Americans, the team’s last year in the National Hockey League. He wouldn’t return to the NHL until the 1944-45 season due to time in the RCAF.

The rest of his NHL career was spent in Montreal, with exception of 25 games for the Chicago Blackhawks in 1956-57. He was sent to Chicago with Bud MacPherson for cash. MacPherson never played a game for the Blackhawks and Mosdell ended up back in Quebec shortly after.

In 1957-58, Mosdell returned to the Habs for two regular season games. The following season, he played two more games with Montreal, this time in the playoffs. These would be his last games in the NHL and would get his name on the Stanley Cup for the fourth and last time.

Mosdell helped the Canadiens to Stanley Cup championships in 1945-46, 1952-53, 1955-56 and 1958-59. In 1953-54, he was named a First Team All-Star Centre, ahead of Ted Kennedy of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The following year, Ken was a Second Team All-Star, behind teammate Jean Beliveau.

Ken Mosdell – Rookie Card

The Ken Mosdell rookie card appears as number 11 in the 1951-52 Parkhurst NHL set. The card shows him as a member of the Montreal Canadiens. He appeared on just four more Parkhurst cards during his career.

Mosdell’s image as a member of the Brooklyn Americans can not be found on hockey cards but there is Beehive Photo that shows him with the long defunct club. He did not appear on a hockey card as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks.
